OLIVE OIL AND THE GREEK ECONOMY
The olive oil industry is one of the most important elements of the Greek agri-food sector. The number of cultivated trees is quite large, not only by national standards but on an EU-wide basis as well. The growing of olive trees dates back to early Greek history. Olive plantations are a long-term investment: it takes more than twenty years for the tree to provide fruit, and it only fruits every other year. So, from the early part of Greek history, olive oil was an export agricultural product.
According to data provided by the Federation of Olive Oil Packaging and Labelling Industries, Greece is the third largest olive oil producer in the world and also more than 70% of the total Greek olive oil production is of extra-virgin quality. A number of Greek olive oils are being named as PDO and PGI products (like PDO Kalamata and PGI Lakonia), according to EU legislation. These products gain an advantage through a recognised differentiation that can be promoted and that allows a degree of isolation from competitor products.
Primary markets for Greek olive oil are those in the European Union and there has been a significant increase in recent years of exports to Canada, Australia, Japan, and the United States, as marketing programs, brand awareness, and standardisation have improved. China for example is a key player both in global and Greek economy. The size of its economy and its growth rates reveals its leading role in the evolution of international economy and prosperity. By focusing on oil trade we can see that according to the China Oil Association 20 million tons of plant oils are consumed in the country.
